TRAININGS ON CONTEMPORARY ART AND ARTIST-IN-RESIDENCE PROGRAMS

Training on Contemporary Art

The training on “Contemporary Art” was realized on August 28th, 2019 in İstanbul Research Institute, Beyoğlu, between 14:00 and 16:00 with the participation of 22 people. The training was given by academics Fırat Arapoğlu and Nusret Polat. The concept of contemporary art in historical context, the Istanbul Biennial, the place of art in Turkish society, Çanakkale Biennial were among the topics that were discussed.

Two expert academics talked about current issues in the field of contemporary art. In both speeches accompanied by visual presentations, the conceptual framework of contemporary art, the use of materials, variety of forms, actors and contemporary art environments were mentioned. Questions such as “What is contemporary art?” “How does contemporary art differ from previous periods with its variety of forms and narratives?” “How did technological developments, political and social change affect art?” were discussed.

In the second part of the training, a discussion platform was created by taking the questions and comments of the audience about the topics covered in the presentations made during the first part. The training helped partners and stakeholders of the Daire Project achieve a common view and conceptual integrity on the basic concepts of contemporary art. In addition, it provided an idea about current issues in our country and in the world regarding contemporary art. The effects of this information on the design and implementation of Daire Artist-in-Residence Program were also evaluated.

In light of the previous artist-in-residence implementations in Turkey, representatives of institutions working on artist-in-residence programs and experts from this field discussed subjects such as best practices and ethical frameworks, communication and collaboration with public institutions, processes of interactions with city contexts and transfer of experience between different generations of artists.

The training helped partners and beneficiaries of Daire project gain in-depth knowledge on artist-in-residence programs and has been an occasion to introduce Daire Project to the senior representatives of Turkey’s most influential contemporary art institutions.
